Who We Are
We are a group of people who have found Swissvale to be a special place that deserves some TLC! |
The neighboring Boroughs of Swissvale, Rankin, and Braddock, PA are distressed neighborhoods sorely in need of community-based and humanitarian assistance. Swissvale Cares, Inc. aims to provide no-cost services, boost community awareness, and improve the overall quality of life for those who participate.
Swissvale has been home to the food pantry for 30 years, the last 2 years at 2011 Noble St. In January of 2017, Swissvale Cares, Inc. took over operations and management of the Swissvale Community Food Pantry (SCFP). The transition was seamless considering a majority of the board members have been involved with the SCFP for years prior to and up until this transition occurred. Our commitment is to operate strictly with a volunteer staff to meet the needs of our fellow community clients. We have done this and will continue to do this with regularly scheduled distributions as well as emergency distributions as the need arises. We distribute monthly allotments of food to individuals and families in our community who have demonstrated need. The food we distribute is provided to us by a combination of public and private funds. We are an agency member of the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank (GPCFB). We utilize the 412 Food Rescue to supplement our distribution and are the recipient of regular food drives by local Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Church Groups, and Post Office collection drives. On average we serve approximately 155 families or 350 people a month. We do this with a completely unpaid volunteer staff. On a monthly basis this requires some 25 people giving 160 hours of service. During our community distribution days, we have partnered with our service organizations like the Mon Valley Initiative, YWCA, United Health Care, CCAC Boyce Campus, and others to provide much needed information on programs and services that would be available to our clients. Come help out at our next distribution! These are held the first and third Thursday of each month 9 AM to 12:30 PM. |
